UEFA Champions League draw, matches 2024-25

The 36 teams competing in the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League, Europe's top football competition, discovered their opponents following Thursday's draw in Monaco under the tournament’s revamped format.

Using a new league-phase system, teams were paired with their eight opponents—two from each of the four pots—through a mix of manual and computerized selections. Former Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon drew the teams from the bowl, and top scorer and five time Champions league winner Cristiano Ronaldo triggered the computer to schedule the matchups, which were then displayed on screen.

Reigning champions Real Madrid will face Borussia Dortmund, the team they defeated in last year’s final, in a home game, while also traveling to Liverpool as part of their eight fixtures.

Defending 2022/23 champions Manchester City will also have a rematch against Inter Milan, alongside away games against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Juventus.

PSG is considered to have one of the most challenging draws among Pot 1 teams, with games against Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Atlético Madrid, and Arsenal.

In the new format, the group stage has been replaced by a 36-team league where each team plays eight matches—four at home and four away—against eight different opponents from four seeded pots.

This contrasts with the previous system where 32 teams were divided into groups of four. Now, clubs face a broader range of teams earlier in the competition.

The top eight teams in the league will qualify directly for the knockout round. Teams ranked 9th to 24th will enter a two-legged play-off to secure their place in the last 16. Unlike the previous system, teams eliminated in this stage will not qualify for the Europa League.

Award for Cristiano

Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time leading scorer in UEFA Champions League history, took the stage to accept an award recognizing his remarkable accomplishments. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin commented, "When we think of football, we think of Ronaldo."

Ronaldo reflected on the importance of the Champions League, describing it as "special" and recalling how hearing the competition’s anthem always motivated him. With a grin, he added, "The Champions League and goals are like ketchup—once you open it, they just keep coming," eliciting laughter and applause from the crowd.

The Europa League will also adopt this new format, while the Europa Conference League will be rebranded as the UEFA Conference League, with each competition featuring 36 teams.

When will the games take place?

The league phase for the Champions League and Europa League will run from September to January, while the Conference League’s league phase will conclude in December. Matches will continue to be held midweek with each competition having exclusive match weeks.

Match dates and kick-off times will be confirmed on Saturday.
