"Listen to the people and take the right action," -Yvonne Chaka Chaka urges Akufo-Addo regarding galamsey.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the renowned South African musician, affectionately known as the "Princess of Africa," has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fulfill his promises to tackle the issue of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

The Umqombothi singer expressed her concern about the widespread impact of illegal mining on young people, noting that it remains a significant problem not only in Ghana but also in South Africa.

She urged the Ghanaian government to take decisive action to restore the country’s forest cover and rehabilitate damaged lands.

During an interview with Caleb Kudah on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, October 4, while in Ghana, Chaka Chaka mentioned an upcoming Global Citizen meeting in Ivory Coast.

At the event, she plans to personally appeal to President Akufo-Addo to make the fight against galamsey a priority.

She emphasized that young people are calling for solutions and stressed the importance of the president following through on his promises, ensuring that Ghana’s natural resources benefit everyone and that there is access to clean water.

"When we say people shall govern, it's those same people who bring solutions. So, we need the president to listen to the people of Ghana and do what is right," she remarked.

This follows the #OccupyJulorbiHouse protests, where demonstrators raised concerns about illegal mining and economic issues. Protesters were arrested after a three-day demonstration at the 37 Military Roundabout.
