Reggie Rockstone, 61, Makes Triumphant MMA Debut to Spotlight Ghana’s Growing Fight Scene

Ghanaian music legend Reggie Rockstone surprised fans and sports enthusiasts alike by stepping into the MMA cage for the first time—and walking out victorious. At 61 years old, the Hiplife pioneer defeated seasoned fighter William Nortey Addo in an intense exhibition match, securing a rear-naked choke submission in the second round.

But for Rockstone, this fight was never about personal glory or proving himself as a combat athlete. Speaking after the bout, he made it clear that his primary mission was to help raise awareness for the emerging MMA community in Ghana.

“I used my name to headline this show because I wanted to use this fight to promote MMA in Ghana,” he explained in a post-fight interview with Max TV. “This wasn’t about me being able to beat my opponent in a serious fight. The idea was to draw attention to the sport.”

The fight itself was a thrilling spectacle. Early in the first round, Addo landed a sharp kick to Rockstone’s jaw, sending him to the canvas and shocking the crowd. But Rockstone, defying both age and expectations, bounced back dramatically—landing a strong head kick of his own that turned the tide. Although he missed an opportunity to finish the fight with ground strikes, he stayed composed and waited for his moment.

That moment came in the second round. Rockstone executed a slick takedown, then transitioned smoothly into a rear-naked choke. Within seconds, Addo tapped out—marking an unlikely but impressive victory for the veteran entertainer.

Outside the cage, Rockstone used the platform to speak directly to Ghana’s youth. Addressing a growing issue, he urged them to stay away from substance abuse, particularly the rising use of opioids known locally as “Red.”

“The youth should stop using drugs like 'Red',” he warned, adding with a chuckle, “I don’t use bedroom performance enhancers either—ask my wife.”

Rockstone’s foray into MMA might have been unexpected, but it delivered more than just entertainment. It sparked national conversation, uplifted a growing sport, and reminded audiences that influence can be used for powerful, positive change—both inside and outside the cage.
